35 Year Old & Still Going !

The year 2006 marks the 35th anniversary for Headrest. It is a time to note our accomplishments and give thanks to supporters who kept us in operation and to our staff who has provided the citizens of the Upper Valley with 35 years of uninterrupted services.

Comments from a former Trustee

"From the very beginning until the present day, over more than twenty-five years, I believe HEADREST has been sustained by at least three enduring principles. The first is the cohesion of the group who work there, the affection, honesty, and magnetism the staff have for each other and which are nourishing through the darker times of serving the troubled public. Second is the trust in the basic goodness of human nature and the experience of life, the possibility of hope and the recovery in dire situations, the respect for natural moments of joy and success. And the third is the vision of a kinder and more compassionate human society."

Accomplishments...

Headrest has continuously maintained a crisis telephone hotline service answering calls from all of New Hampshire and all of Vermont for 34 years….more than 12,000 days and nights. Over this span of 300,000 consecutive hours, Headrest’s trained crisis counselors and Suicideologists have answered an average of 10,000 calls a year from people in various states of crisis and distress.

Headrest also provides an Outpatient Counseling Service to help people overcome their addictions regardless of their ability to pay. Headrest’s mission is to help those with limited income, so no one is turned away. Our counselors meet the education and training requirements set by the State of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. The program is managed by a New Hampshire Licensed Alcohol & Drug Counselor (LADC).

Headrest has also established a Transitional Living Program providing those who have successfully completed the 28 Day Program with a safe, substance-free home until they are prepared to go back out on their own.

A Friend of Buddy Gray

The sunflower that traditionally adorns the front door at HEADREST reminds us of our friend, colleague, and mentor, Buddy Gray, who was tragically killed while working to end homelessness in the Over-The-Rhine district of Cincinnati, Ohio.
